Is the UK Failing to Take the Export of Knowledge Seriously?

Private tutoring agency, Tutors International, reported today that they are concerned about the export of knowledge as a valuable asset

“For Britain to compete the with the rest of the world, we need to improve the academic standards of our graduates,” commented Adam Caller, founder of Tutors International, a leading provider of high calibre private tutors around the world.

“The UK is falling behind the US, China and India in bringing innovation and new skills to the international market. The Education Secretary [Michael Gove] is attempting to address standards of education in this country with more rigorous exams, which will eventually raise the overall academic ability of our students, but the lack of interest in exporting knowledge is pervasive.”

Tutors International cites the prestigious Queen’s Award for Enterprise, which has a category for Export, as one example of the UK’s failure to take the country’s investment in knowledge and education seriously. “The winners of the Export awards are manufacturers,” says Mr Caller. “While I’m delighted that the UK is producing and exporting valuable products to the rest of the world, I am surprised that services, expertise and knowledge are not considered valuable enough as ‘exportable products’ to win such an award.”

Mr Caller also recently commented on a BBC article that outlined the Education Secretary’s plans to recruit computer science graduates as teachers in an attempt to ‘reboot’ the national curriculum. Mr Caller stated that the UK would fail to find all the graduates needed, and would need to import them from countries such as India and China where standards of higher education are exceeding our own.

Tutors International, based in Oxford, has placed private tutors with families in 22 countries. The company reported that November of this year saw the busiest month since forming in 1999. There has been significant year-on-year growth over the past six years, and financial results for the year 2010-2011 revealed growth of around 20%.
