‘AS-Level Grade Not As Good As Expected? Ask the School Some Hard Questions,’ say Tutors International

With AS-Level results now published, Tutors International urge parents to look rationally at the expected A-Level grades for next year, speak to your child’s school about it and take action quickly if extra help is needed.

Leading global private tuition agency, Tutors International, announced today that should AS-Level grades not be as high as expected, it’s time to ask the school some hard questions.

“If a student needs to re-sit their AS Levels in January, it’s forever on record, and it may hinder their university application. This is the time that parents need to contact the school and demand to know why their child failed to get the grades they were aiming for, and what action needs to be taken ahead of their final A-Level year,” said Adam Caller, founder of Tutors International and member of the Independent Education Consultants Association.

Mr Caller likens the situation to teaching a child to swim: “Do you push them into the water and tell them to get on with it, and risk them sinking? Or do you throw them a buoyancy aid, get in and help them?“

He believes schools should never sit back and allow a student to fail, so if AS-Level results have proved a disappointment, it’s time to act fast to remedy the situation.

“Parents and students should sit down over the Summer holidays and think rationally and calmly about the next step. If private tuition is needed to get struggling students back up to the appropriate level, they should look into it now. Leaving it until January is going to be too late to turn things around in time for A-Level exams in Summer 2014.”

Mr Caller fears that many independent schools fail to monitor and support older students in completing coursework and doing homework, in an effort to give the student more freedom and responsibility for their actions. He believes this is a misguided approach: “Older teenagers need support from their schools now more than ever to help them reach their potential and unlock the possibilities for further education and employment. Parents need to ask the school what is being done, or will be done, to ensure their child achieves the highest grades they are capable of.”

Likewise with A2 results: if they aren’t as good as the student hoped for and their prospective University demands, they will probably want to re-sit them, in which case steps need to be taken now to prepare for the January re-sit.

Mr Caller said that is happy to talk any education difficulty through with parents, whether they are in school or having private tuition, to guide families in the questions they need to ask and the steps they need to take to ensure good A-Level results next year.
